Der Wein „Brunello di Montalcino“ ist der Ursprung des Brunello aus der Gemeinde Montalcino im Val d’Orciaim im Süden der Provinz Siena (Toskana), die ihm auch dem Namen „Brunello di Montalcino“ verliehen hat.
Dieser Wein ist international sehr gefragt und gehört zu den besten Rotweinen Italiens. Für die Herstellung des Rotweins „Brunello di Montalcino“ gelten besondere Regeln. Der Wein wird sortenrein aus einer Art der Sangiovese-Traube (Sangiovese Grosso oder auch Brunello genannt), gekeltert.
Ähnlich wie Barolo ist Brunello D.O.C.G. lange lagerungsfähig und darf ab dem Erntejahr nach dem 5. darauffolgenden Jahr in den Handel gelangen. Brunellos sind schwere, komplexe Weine, die über ein bestimmtes Tannin-Gerüst verfügen und im Laufe der Zeit sehr gefällig werden.
